Black Sheep – George Wilder
For the Black Sheep assignment, I chose to illustrate George Wilder because I found the symbols in his story fascinating. Using my usual illustration style, I aimed to convey Wilder’s innocence, as his crimes were relatively minor, like stealing money from milk bottles, which is depicted in the artwork. Other symbols include scones on a windowsill, representing how supporters left food for him during his prison escapes, a 30-foot prison wall, a bed-sheet rope, and the silhouette of Mount Eden prison in Wilder’s hair. The middle and left side of the portrait feature a nighttime car chase, handcuffs, music notes, and a record to depict his initial capture while listening to jazz music. The New Zealand ferns symbolize his escape to the Coromandel bush. I used a predominantly green and sea-foam color scheme to compare his Mount Eden prison cell to being underwater in a submarine. The composition encourages viewers to explore every corner of the portrait, revealing different aspects of Wilder’s story.
